Episode 3

Storyline

Episode 3 is the falling action of the podcast’s narrative structure, where Pia struggles to come up with creative ideas for her art assignment’s exhibition. She saw a website that explains various methods to boost one’s creativity. She decided to try it and managed to find an idea for her artwork. She then reflects on the paradox of attention and creativity and how everyone’s creative process is unique.  Pia wants to convey that having a short attention span is not always a bad thing and can even lead to creative breakthroughs.

Inspiration

We were sitting in the university study lounge, trying to brainstorm ideas for our podcast. It was a challenge trying to come up with unique and interesting ideas. That is when a team member remembered a conversation she had with her friend about how attention and creativity are linked. She brought up the topic and the group seemed interested. The group proceeds to discuss the paradox of attention and creativity. Surprisingly, a short attention span is beneficial to our creative side. We realised that this topic is relevant in today’s fast-paced world. Thus, we wanted to create an episode that not only explored the relationship between attention and creativity, but also provided advice to help people unleash their creative potential.

Research Findings

The research findings suggest a paradoxical relationship between attention and creativity. While attention is often considered a prerequisite for creativity, too much focused attention can hinder the creative process. This is because creativity requires divergent thinking and the ability to generate new and unexpected ideas, which is limited by excessive attention to details. However, in certain contexts such as brainstorming and creative problem solving, a shorter attention span can enhance creativity by allowing individuals to quickly move between ideas and make new connections between them. Additionally, sustained attention is necessary for developing and refining ideas, filtering out distractions and promoting divergent thinking. Therefore, understanding the complex relationship between attention and creativity is crucial for challenging misconceptions and appreciating its role in the creative process.
